This is how I make natural lip balm with beeswax from our hive. I like the idea of using ingredients that I would eat. It is lip balm after all.
I am always looking in my pocket for a lip balm when the weather is cold and windy. In my quest for plastic and chemical free days I started looking around for a lip balm that does not come in a plastic tube. There are a few, but nothing reliably available that I like. And, when I started reading the ingredients, I thought would like to try something more natural.
Natural ingredients
You only need three ingredients:
- beeswax
- coconut oil
- olive oil
Equipment you will need
I used the following:
- small jar
- small saucepan or milk pan
- metal dessert spoon
- empty lip balm tubes or containers
This recipe for natural lip balm using beeswax is so simple I almost have nothing to write about. Except, that I love the result and am making some for friends for Christmas. It is so easy and I am happy to know that I can have a completely natural product for my lips and skin.
How to make lip balm with beeswax
Step 1:
You will need some beeswax. I have some from my beehive after extracting honey. You can also buy beeswax from lots of places.
I like to support local and I have used Beequip. They are about as close to local as I can get, so helpful and great for beekeeping supplies. https://beequip.nz/products/raw-beeswax-1kg?_pos=1&_sid=aff297269&_ss=r
And, Beequip sells beeswax and wicks so it is a good place to look if you are interested in making your own birthday candles like I did here https://mynaturalcottage.com/2021/11/01/how-to-make-birthday-candles-from-beeswax/
Step 2:
The second ingredient is coconut oil. I used coconut oil from a jar that I have in the pantry. The coconut oil is solid here in the winter as the pantry temperature is cold.
As I said, I like the idea of using ingredients that I would eat. Especially for a product I would put on my lips.
Melt the beeswax and coconut oil in a small jar over a low heat. Put enough water in a saucepan to come about two thirds of the way up the side of the jar. The beeswax will melt at 62-64C so the water does not need to get too hot or boil.
Step 3:
Olive oil, again I used the olive oil I had in the pantry.
It is something I eat every day so I am comfortable putting it in my lip balm. The olive oil softens the lip balm. It has a lower melting point, so the more you add the softer the lip balm will be and easy to apply. It is really a matter of what you like best.
Stir the beeswax and coconut oil to blend the melted mixture. Then, add the olive oil and gently blend that in too.
Step 4:
Optional if you want to add a fragrance or flavour. You can stir in half a teaspoon of raw honey, or some essential oils, if you want to flavour your lip balm.
Take the jar out of the warm water and at this point you can quite easily pour the mixture into empty lip balm tubes or small jars. It will set in a few minutes and you can just put the jar back in the warm water if you want to soften the lip balm again.
Make your own refills or gifts
I hope this encourages you to try to make your own lip balm. I promise you will have lots to give to friends as well. It will make a good gift for any reason, Christmas, birthday, or just because, presents. I would love to know what you think, and any variations you tried.
